Thompson Announces Chief Investigative Counsel for Select Committee

Bolton, MS—Chairman Bennie G. Thompson today announced that Timothy J. Heaphy, University Counsel at the University of Virginia, will take a leave of absence from his position to serve as Chief Investigative Counsel for the Select Committee. Mr. Heaphy previously served as United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia.

“It’s good news for the Select Committee and for the American people that Mr. Heaphy has agreed to come onboard as our top investigator. Mr. Heaphy is a committed public servant with deep experience tackling complex and high-profile challenges. The Committee will need his expertise as we push ahead quickly on a number of fronts. I’m grateful for his willingness to support the Committee’s work getting answers about January 6th and protecting our democracy,” said Chairman Thompson.

Tim Heaphy will serve as Chief Investigative Counsel to the Select Committee.  He currently serves as University Counsel at the University of Virginia and will take a leave of absence from that role during his service to the Select Committee.  He is a former U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Virginia, appointed by President Obama in 2009 and serving through 2014.  As a partner at the law firm of Hunton Andrews Kurth, Mr. Heaphy conducted a comprehensive independent review of the August 2017 mass demonstration events in Charlottesville, Virginia for the City of Charlottesville.
